Shere Abbott, chief international officer at AAAS, is an environmental scientist with 20 years of experience in research planning, assessment, education, and policy related to human development and the environment. She has held senior positions in non-profit institutions and the government and developed an extensive network of high-level scientists and officials within the national and international community. Serving as executive director of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences' Board on Sustainable Development, Abbott produced the ground-breaking report Our Common Journey: A Transition Toward Sustainability, which proposed a strategy for using scientific and technical knowledge to better inform future action in the areas of energy and materials use, fertility reduction, urban systems, agricultural production, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation, and suggested an approach for building a new research agenda for sustainability science. She has directed studies of global environmental change, polar research and international science and organizations that led to the release of more than a dozen consensus reports and other documents on setting priorities for research, linking scientific and technical knowledge with decision-making and building the capacity of international organizations. Abbott was awarded her A.B. from Goucher College in biological sciences, and her M.F.S. from Yale University, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, in wildlife ecology and natural resource policy.
