American Association for the Advancement of Science
Monica M. Bradford serves as executive editor of Science, the prestigious weekly international journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In this position, she oversees the Science peer-review system used to select manuscripts, the copyediting and proofreading process, and the production and manufacture of the print product. Since 1995, Ms. Bradford has played a major role in the development of Science Online and online knowledge environments. She is the project administrator for Science Signaling, the signal transduction knowledge environment, which provides a forum for information on how cells "talk" to each other through chemical signals. Such research is essential for understanding a broad range of biological events, from the development of an embryo to cancer formation. Ms. Bradford also administers the Amersham Pharmacia Biotech & Science Prize for Young Scientists in Molecular Biology. APBiotech, a leading global provider of biotechnology systems, products and services, teamed up with Science to establish the Young Scientists Prize in 1995. Each year, the Prize supports molecular biologists in an early stage of their careers. Prior to joining the staff of AAAS and Science in 1989, Ms. Bradford worked for the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society for nine years. She holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and has done graduate work in management at the University of Maryland. Ms. Bradford is on the Board of the American Heart Association, and she is vice-chair of the AHA Scientific Publishing Committee, and director of the Council of Biological Editors.
