Florence Fasanelli is the associate program director for DC ACTS, an initiative designed to reform science and mathematics education in DC public schools through a partnership with the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the District of Columbia Public Schools, and supported by a cooperative agreement with NSF. She works intensively with individual elementary school teachers, as well as middle and high school mathematics faculty, to deepen their understanding of national and local mathematics curriculum and teaching standards. Previously at the Mathematical Association of America, she was the director of SUMMA (Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement) Intervention Programs, encouraging and funding mathematicians on college campuses to create programs in mathematics for pre-college minority youngsters. In 1998 these programs reached 45,000 students. She is director of the MAA's Tensor Foundation program, which funds programs to encourage women and girls to continue the study of mathematics. Fasanelli's particular expertise lies in the areas of professional development, mathematics education, developing networks and utilizing the history of mathematics to increase the understanding of what is being taught in the classroom. Fasanelli has BA and MA degrees in mathematics from Wells College and Southern Methodist University, and a PhD in mathematics education from American University with emphasis on the history of 20th century mathematics.
