American Association for the Advancement of Science
Katrina L. Kelner has served as a top editor for Science, the weekly journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), since 1985. In her role as deputy editor for Life Sciences, Kelner supervises the recruitment and management of all scholarly articles within the broad area of biological sciences. She also edits Science's Compass section, which provides a forum where voices from the scientific community can present their views on science, policy and books. Immediately before joining AAAS, Dr. Kelner worked for the National Institutes of Health as a PRAT Fellow. At the NIH, her research in the laboratory of Dr. Harvey Pollard focused on how glucocorticoid hormones regulate the synthesis of chemical transmitters in the brain called catecholamines. Kelner earned her undergraduate degree in Biology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, in 1975. She then received her Ph.D. in Cell Biology/Neuroscience in 1981, working in the Cell Biology Department at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. While there, she completed a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship (1976-1980), investigating estrogen action in the brain. This work was followed by a year-long postdoctoral fellowship at the Marine Biomedical Institute at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
