Peter J. Stang has been the College of Science Dean of the University of Utah since 1997. A Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Stang received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and his postdoctorate from Princeton University. His many awards include the Utah Governor's Medal for Science and Technology and the Rosenblatt Prize. He has been elected to both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Stang also serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, and is a board member of AAAS. He has published more than 300 papers in diverse areas of chemistry, and is the ninth most-cited researcher in his specialty field of molecular architecture and self-assembly. His work has sparked the interest of companies such as DuPont and Exxon Corp. His areas of interest include molecular architecture via coordination; formation of discrete supramolecular species with well-defined geometries and shapes via self-assembly; polyvalent iodine species; alkynyl esters; and reactive intermediates (vinyl cations, unsaturated carbenes).
