Andrew M. Sugden received a degree in Botany from the Oxford University in 1975, and earned his doctoral degree in 1980, also from Oxford, in tropical rain forest ecology. He completed his postdoctoral assignment at the Cambridge University in 1985. Sugden's research emphasized tropical rain forest ecology, especially in the mountains of Colombia and Venezuela. His subsequent publishing career has included positions as founding editor of the international monthly review journal, Trends in Ecology & Evolution, from 1986 until 1999. He also served as co-editor of the history of science quarterly, Endeavour, from 1996 until 1999, founding editor of Trends in Plant Sciences and managing editor at Elsevier Trends Journals. Since that time, he has served as senior editor responsible for ecology and evolution, for Science International's European headquarters in Cambridge, U.K., and is now the international managing editor. During his tenure, Sugden has guided the publication of nearly 500 ecology- and evolution-related papers accepted for publication by Science. He has played a key role in the publication of several special issues focusing on ecology and evolution. Science is an editorially independent, weekly general science journal whose articles consistently rank among the world's most often cited research reports, as monitored by the Institute for Scientific Information. Science has the largest paid circulation of any peer-reviewed general science journal in the world, with more than 134,000 subscribers, as well as 273 affiliated institutions, representing 10 million individuals.
