AAAS Experts & Speakers Service

Phillip D. Szuromi

Phillip D. Szuromi

Phillip D. Szuromi is a supervisory senior editor at Science, the prestigious weekly international journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Hired in 1986 as part of a team to attract more physical sciences to the research journal section of the magazine, he has helped to increase the representation of these fields to its current level of 40%. He also edits the feature, "This Week in Science," which briefly highlights all of the research papers published each week. Szuromi has published several papers in on the catalytic chemistry (primarily alkane activation and Fischer-Tropsch reactions) performed on well-defined single-crystal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. His areas of interest include chemistry, physics, materials science, and atmospheric science. He is an expert in the field of nanotechnology—the development of molecule-sized electronic circuits and device—and an elected fellow of AAAS. Szuromi earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology.
