AAAS Science Journalism Awards

2003 JUDGES

Dennis O'Brien

Paul Guinnessy

Paul Guinnessy has a degree in Astrophysics from Queen Mary College, University of London (1992), where he spent another three years researching and building instruments to measure the movement of sand over sand dunes. There is truth to the rumor that his designs were inspired from watching James Bond movies.

After realizing that science writing was as much fun as research, but less dusty, he ended up working freelance for the Sunday Times, The Independent, The Economist, Physics World and New Scientist magazine. In 1997 he helped create, manage, and edit PhysicsWeb.org, one of the first major physics news portals. In May 2000 he moved to Physics Today magazine in College Park, Maryland, where he is the online editor. His hobbies include updating a 1960s science book into metric notation and watching DC United.
