Nomination of AAAS Fellows

The Executive Office invites groups of three AAAS Fellows to nominate AAAS members for election as Fellows. At least two of the three sponsors must not be not affiliated with the institution of the nominee. THE SPONSORS AND THE NOMINEE MUST BE CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE AAAS. A nomination form must be completed and signed by the primary sponsor and each sponsor must submit a supporting letter. It is important that all three letters in support of a nominee be informational, with a clear indication of the areas in which a nominee has contributed and sufficient explanation of why election as a Fellow is justified.

Materials can be sent either on a CD, a mailed hard copy, or via email to Jose Arias, jarias@aaas.org. Electronic submission of nomination materials is encouraged, but not required. A hard copy or CD of the nomination materials, can be mailed to José Arias, AAAS Executive Office Rm. 1232, 12000 New York Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20005.

Queries can be directed to the Executive Office by phone, 202-326-6635.

The deadline for receipt of nomination materials is 14 May 2010. Nominations received after the deadline or nominations with incomplete documentation as of 14 May will be held for consideration in the following year. No exceptions will be made.

A Fellow is defined as "a Member whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished." Examples of areas in which nominees may have made significant contributions are research; teaching; technology; services to professional societies; administration in academe, industry, and government; and communicating and interpreting science to the public. Fellows are elected annually by the AAAS Council.

Responsibility for reviewing and approving Fellow nominations is assigned to the Steering Groups of the 24 Section Committees. Each Steering Group consists of the four Section officers and four Members-at-Large. Affirmative votes by at least five of the members, with no more than two opposed, are required for approval. Sponsors of a rejected nomination may appeal to the Committee on Council Affairs for possible reversal of the Steering Group's decision.

Nominations can also be challenged by any member of the AAAS Council during the voting process. A challenged nomination, if not withdrawn by its sponsors, will be reviewed by the Committee on Council Affairs. The Committee may either present the nomination to the Council for possible election as a Fellow at the next AAAS Annual Meeting or may defer its presentation for one year. New Fellows receive a certificate and rosette and a list of their names is published in an issue of the journal Science.
