Planned/Deferred Gifts

Bequests

Some of AAAS's most important gifts have come through bequests included in donors' wills. They provide the core of AAAS's endowment and provide significant funding for fellowships, lecture series, awards, and program enhancements. A bequest is made through a written and executed will; adding a bequest for the AAAS can be done through a simple codicil.

A will is necessary to direct the distribution of your property upon death. Charitable bequests to AAAS have several advantages:

  • You can designate a bequest to AAAS in support of all of its programs and activities or to a particular program or area that is meaningful to you.
  • Bequests are deductible for estate tax purposes and may place your estate in a lower tax bracket.
  • A bequest to AAAS is a wonderful way to create a legacy in your name or for a loved one.

Your attorney should draft your will with the American Association for the Advancement of Science as the named beneficiary. If you notify the Association of your intention, you will become a member of the "1848 Society," our recognition club for those who have elevated AAAS to the level of family by including the Association in their wills. AAAS is deeply honored and grateful to receive this distinction and would like the opportunity to recognize your generosity during your lifetime. Of course, if you prefer that this remain confidential, we will honor your wishes and include you as an anonymous member.

For sample bequest language for your review and your attorney's opinion, or for more information on including AAAS in your will, please contact AAAS's Director of Development Juli Staiano by e-mail or by calling 202-326-6636 or 1-800-215-1969. All inquiries and information will be treated with strict confidence. (Note: In the event that you would like to create a new or endowed fund, we ask that you contact the Development Office to draft a Memorandum of Understanding. This document will state clearly the name, purpose, and administration of the fund, and ensures that your explicit intentions are carried out.
