Add R&P to your R&D
AAAS's Corporate Research and Philanthropy Program
R&P is companies, especially those who employ scientists and engineers, helping to advance the scientific professions and promote the use of science and technology in improving the lives of others.
Through the American Association for the Advancement of Science's unique R&P Program, corporations provide seed funds to projects that foster scientific freedom and responsibility, raise science literacy standards, facilitate international cooperation among scientists, and advance the use of scientific methods in the protection of human rights around the world. These businesses (1) help support the professions that are core to their research and engineering activities and (2) have a real-world impact on increasing understanding and appreciation of science's role in human progress.
Founded in 1848, the AAAS is the country's oldest and world's largest federation of scientists. Our 135,000 members are leaders in the academic, business, health, and industrial sectors, in fields ranging from genetic research, to astrophysics, to materials engineering. We also publish Science, the world's most respected and widely circulated multidisciplinary scientific journal.
For larger companies, with established corporate giving programs, the R&P Program frequently augments their community support objectives. For smaller firms, the program serves as an easy but powerful step toward increased visibility as good corporate citizens among their peers and customers.
The results of past support of AAAS include:
-
positive, hands-on science experiences for thousands of girls and minority students
-
timely analyses of public policies and federal support affecting research and development
-
education and training of hundreds of young leaders in science through a respected fellowship program
-
highly acclaimed K-12 educational reform publications, such as Benchmarks for Science Literacy and Atlas of Science Literacy
New efforts underway range from a program to help young researchers with disabilities enter the workforce, to a series of workshops that retrain and provide new career options for Russian weapons scientists.
Many companies choose to support the full spectrum of these AAAS activities through a general underwriter gift to the R&P Program. Others direct their funds to specific AAAS areaspromoting science and technology education and diversity; addressing science policy, law, ethics and human rights; promoting international collaboration and sustainable development; reforming K-12 educationwhere they are used at the discretion of the director.
