Successful candidate will serve as a strong leader and coordinator of the Perspectives section of Science, including both biological and physical sciences. Responsibilities will include making decisions on the range of scientific topics to be covered in Perspectives, (which are short articles written by scientists about recent research findings), solicitation of perspectives from scientists in the community, and coordination of the scheduling of Perspectives. In addition, this individual will be expected to bring the Perspectives selection to a new level of accessibility by top editing and instruction of the other editors handling Perspectives; serve as the main contact between the editorial Perspectives group and the copyediting, art and production desktop team; responsible for maintaining the quality and efficiency of the production of these pages by modification of the schedule and workflow, when necessary; perform other work related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Position requires mastery of a professional field typically acquired through the completion of a doctoral degree (scientific discipline); 5-10 years of experience in scientific publishing, including prior experience as a scientific editor; demonstrated editing skill; excellent written and verbal communication skills required in order to communicate with authors and reviewers in editing and modifying manuscripts; experience with desktop publishing is a plus, but is not required; ability to work in a team and within weekly deadlines.
