Challenges in society – from meeting food and energy needs to improving human health and wellbeing – demand creative solutions that combine knowledge and action across disciplines, regions, and sectors. Many students are eager to pursue research projects and careers that will help to address these tough issues. However, traditional graduate and professional programs offer few opportunities for students to learn how their knowledge and energy can contribute to solutions for real–world challenges. ELISS provides an opportunity for talented students across the country to make a difference while gaining valuable leadership skills.
Listen to current graduate and professional students discuss why they are excited about ELISS:
ELISS is a new program that prepares graduate and professional students to work across boundaries toward solutions for complex challenges in society throughout their professional and civic lives. The hands–on, extracurricular program taps the talents and creativity of tomorrow's leaders to help communities and the nation understand and address tough issues in theme areas.
Solving complex challenges requires innovative solutions at the boundaries of disciplines and collaboration among people with a variety of experience, skills, and perspectives. That's why ELISS encourages talented graduate and professional students from ALL fields, including natural and social sciences, engineering, business, law, medicine, humanities, and the arts, to participate. It welcomes basic and applied researchers and those who are training to become practitioners in fields ranging from journalism to health care.
