The Role of Science in Shaping International Policy on Invasive SpeciesJamie Reaser Invasive species are an issue of concern for international bodies such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The U.S. is actively participating in these. It is our intent to ensure that the policies and initiatives developed within these bodies are based on sound science and provide for scientific and technical solutions that are practical. Therefore, we need to encourage and enable scientific experts on invasive species to become actively involved in policy making and implementation processes. A critical challenge is how to strengthen the interface between the scientific and policymaking communities with respect to invasive species issues. Specific opportunities include the Global Invasive Species Programme (http://jasper.stanford.edu/GISP/), IUCN Species Survival Commission (www.iucn.org/themes/ssc/), and National Invasive Species Council (www.invasivespecies.gov/). |
