IUCN Montreal Workshop: Discussion Topics

To bring continuity to the Workshopís various sessions and to help identify common themes, the organizers developed the following list of discussion questions. The answers to these questions were useful for developing a summary list of lessons learned and policy recommendations.

Discussion Questions

1. What are the major population variables (e.g. population growth, migration, spatial distribution, health, etc.) and water variables (e.g. quality, supply, access) considered in each case study?

2. What specific connections between population dynamics and water resources do the case studies reveal?

3. What important social, economic, political, and ecological factors act as mediating variables between population dynamics and water resources in the case studies?

4. What are the common issues/themes among population and water relationships in the developing regions represented by the case studies?

5. Are there any unique characteristics of population-water linkages presented in the case studies or regions?

6. How could measures that address population issues (e.g., land reform, rural infrastructure development, slowing population growth) help improve the water resource situation in the case study areas?

7. How could measures that improve the water resource situation (e.g., regulating water use, water education, improvement of water and sanitation infrastructure) affect the population dynamics in the case study areas?

8. What are the general policy implications emerging from the case studies? Can any be added to the lists the authors developed?
