New Security Policies for the AAAS Annual Meeting

In light of heightened concerns, the Sheraton Boston, the Boston Marriott Copley Place, and the Hynes Convention Center have made several enhancements to their security practices. These include increased numbers of uniformed and plain-clothed guards, additional surveillance cameras, and supplemental training of security staff. In addition, new policies have been developed to better identify attendees and hotel guests. While some of these may seem inconvenient, please understand that they are intended to improve the overall security of meeting attendees.
  • A government-issued picture ID (such as a driver's license or passport) will be required to pick up your registration badge. There will be no exceptions to this policy.
  • AAAS registration badges will be required for admission to all plenary lectures, topical lectures, and symposia. Please allow sufficient time to pick up your badge prior to any events you wish to attend.
  • Unattended briefcases, backpacks, luggage, or packages will not be permitted in meeting rooms or public spaces and may be removed by Security. If you see any such unattended items, please notify Security at the appropriate number:
In the Hynes, call extension 2111 or 617-954-2111.
In the Sheraton, call extension 4315 or 617-236-6025.
In the Marriott, call extension 6664 or 617-236-5800 extension 6664.
  • When you arrive at the Hynes Convention Center, the guards will direct you to the AAAS Registration area, where you can pick up your name badge. You must wear this badge at all times when you're in the Hynes. Otherwise, you may be asked by Security to leave.
  • With the exception of AAAS session organizers and speakers, the Hynes will not allow anyone to bring boxes of materials through the main entrances. Session organizers and speakers may bring in up to two small hand-carried boxes of materials for their sessions, but those materials will be subject to search. Exhibitors must use the Cambria Street loading-dock entrance for all freight, including hand-carried boxes.
  • Your hotel may require you to show a government-issued photo ID to verify your identity upon check in. They also may require you to show your room-key to gain access to the garage. All cars entering the hotel garages are subject to search.
  • Some hotel entrances will be locked in the late evening, and access will be limited to those who can identify themselves as guests by showing a room key.
These policies have been developed with your safety in mind. We appreciate your cooperation, and look forward to seeing you in Boston. If you have any comments or questions regarding these policies, please feel free to contact Melissa Rosenthal at (202) 326-6410 or mrosenth@aaas.org. victim
