The extraordinary intellectual offerings of the AAAS Annual Meeting makes it the year's most important gathering for the growing segment of the science and technology community interested in the interactions among disciplines and in the influence of science and technology on the human condition. The meeting brings together a diverse array of leading scientists, engineers, educators, and policy-makers and typically includes up to 10,000 participants and hundreds of members of the national and international media.

While the aim of advancing science and technology is already, in itself, a strong motivator of the interdisciplinary thrust of the AAAS Annual Meeting, the character of the challenges to the human condition creates even more powerful incentives to exploit the interdisciplinary approaches that are the AAAS hallmark.

The theme for the 2008 Annual Meeting—"Science and Technology from a Global Perspective"—emphasizes the power of science and technology as well as education to assist less-developed segments of the world society, to improve partnerships among already-developed countries, and to spur knowledge-driven transformations across a host of fields. The program will also emphasize ground-breaking areas of research, new and exciting developments, and cross-cutting activities in support of science, technology, and education around the world.
