Science and Human Rights Reception

The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program Reception
honors one or more scientists, who, through action
and example, have promoted human rights, usually at
great personal risk. The 2004 honorees are the scientists
working with the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology
Foundation (FAFG). The FAFG has exhumed and identified
bodies from massacre sites throughout Guatemala and
around the world. The organization has carried out
hundreds of exhumations, identifying over 2,000 victims
of Guatemalas 35-year civil war. Over the past
three years, these scientists have faced increased
threats and harassment from individuals believed to
have ties to the Guatemalan military. Despite the
danger, FAFG continues its vital work. FAFG Director
Freddy Peccerelli will be at the event to accept the
honor on behalf of his colleagues. This event is open
to all Annual Meeting participants, reporters and
the general public.
