During the annual meeting, AAAS is hosting a town hall
meeting on pressing and important marine science issues
that affect the Pacific Northwest and the nation.
The meeting, titled Oceans for Everyone,
will take place at the Washington State Convention and
Trade Center in Seattle on Sunday, 15 February from
2:00pm-5:00pm. We expect to have between 300 and 350
participants. In addition, COMPASS (SeaWeb), the Pacific
Science Center, Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies
of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), People for Puget Sound, Puget
Sound Action Team, SeaChange, the Seattle Aquarium,
the University of Washington and other groups are partnering
with us in support of this event.
In addition to members of the general public, we expect
that the town hall event will be attended by marine
science experts, scientists from other disciplines and
members of marine science interest groups concerned
about the health of our oceans.
To facilitate the town hall meeting, AAAS is collaborating
with Public Agenda, a national nonprofit group that
has organized productive civic dialogues in thousands
of communities across the country on many public issues.
The public forum will include both small group sessions
and a larger, town-hall style discussion among a diverse
cross-section of the public, policymakers, experts and
stakeholders with a special interest in the issues at
hand.

AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and
Technology
The Seattle public forum is sponsored by AAASs new
Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology.
The Centers overarching goal is to forge a better
understanding between the scientific community and the
general public on the increasingly complex scientific
issues that affect our daily lives. We also hope to increase
public input into scientific research agendas by creating
opportunities for dialogue among policymakers, the public
and the scientific community.

IS REQUIRED AND IS ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS.
