The Marine Science Pavilion is an all-inclusive venue for what's “hot” in the marine sciences. At this interactive pavilion, both children and adults will find information and educational resources on marine science.

A special theater will show recent expeditions and the technological advances that make these explorations possible. Join us Saturday, 14 February at 1:00PM, for a special Marine Sciences Reception in the exhibit hall.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

Tabletop Activities
Oobleck!
Make and explore with Oobleck, a colloid that has properties of both a solid and a liquid.

Slow Ball Machine
Design and build a “slow ball machine,” which allows a super ball to travel down an inclined plane as slowly as possible without stopping or falling off.

Marvelous Moon
Learn about the moon — experiment with launching rockets!

Exhibits

Space Odyssey Exhibits
The Space Odyssey Exhibits encourage visitors to explore the cosmos and discover our universe. Assemble puzzles, drive robots and take an amazing celestial journey with Space Odyssey.

Physics on Wheels Exhibits
Generate excitement with electricity, magnets, sound and simple machines with the Physics on Wheels exhibits! Visitors will touch a plasma ball, swing a pendulum, even ride on a gyroscope!

Planetarium Shows
We bring the universe to you! Inside the inflatable dome, visitors explore the stars of the current nighttime sky.

Specific topics may include:
Sky stories from Greek, Native American and other cultures
How to read a Star Map
Navigation using a Star Map and North Star

  Shows
Super Cool Science Show
This engaging show uses liquid nitrogen, props, costumes, volunteers and audience imagination to demonstrate that we are all scientists. Join in as we discover a variety of surprising, super cool experiments!

Volts & Jolts
Get ready for hair-raising science with Volts & Jolts! This interactive science show introduces participants to many aspects of electricity, from zip-zappy experiments to important everyday uses.

Ecosystems Workshop
This hour-long workshop will have you peering into the watery world of micro and macro invertebrates, pondering fresh water ecosystems. Explore ideas about how living things get their energy. It’s a web of life!

Explore compost composition; what is soil made of? Hone your observation skills as you use a hand lens and microscope to solve the mystery.
Create your own geology field guide while you test rocks and minerals for hardness, luster and mineral content.
Help construct a landscape and test variables of soil composition, deforestation and water in your model. Learn what you can do to combat the effects of erosion.
Experience a series of hand-on inquiry investigations, K-10. Activities illustrate students’ development of conceptual understanding using AAAS benchmarks.
Learn how your school or district can access high quality materials and professional development support for your classrooms.
Find out more about your child’s inquiry-based science curriculum and how you can support and extend that learning at home!

Feeding Frenzy
Imagine you're a hungry bird. What sort of beak will let you catch the most food? Compete against other hungry birds to find out. And may the best beak win!

Construction Instruction
Teams race the clock and each other to build giant structures. And the builder is blindfolded! This game will put your communication skills to the test.

Respiration Stations
It's a relay race of blood cells, ferrying oxygen to oxygen-starved leg muscles. The team that makes the leg jump the most times wins!

Make A Mission
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to play -- but it helps. Your mission is to equip and launch a mission to planet Mercury. Choose your equipment and launch vehicle wisely to prevent your mission from becoming impossible.

Hair Affair: Bringing to Life the Science of Hair
We care for it daily, but have you ever thought about how it grows, why it falls out, what makes it go curly and how products like hairspray work? The Hair Affair: Bringing to Life the Science of Hair has all the answer in talks and workshops that make science a fun/learning experience.
