Controversy Over Farm Bill AFRI Language

AAU sent a letter to Farm Bill conferees regarding language that would exempt a matching fund requirement for some universities that receive funding from AFRI.

On November 5, the Association of American Universities (AAU) sent a letter to the House and Senate Farm Bill conferees regarding language that would exempt a matching fund requirement for some universities that receive funding from the USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI).  The language in the current version of the Farm Bill (H.R. 2642) would exempt some public institutions, but not all. AAU urged Farm Bill conferees to revise the language (see Section 7128), and noted that for “AFRI to remain a truly competitive program that supports the highest quality research, it is important to maintain equal and nondiscriminatory eligibility requirements for all university grant applicants.”
