House Space Subcommittee Holds Hearing on Space Traffic

At a 9 May hearing held by the House Space Subcommittee, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requested authority over commercial satellite operators, including the authority to order evasive action to prevent collisions. While the FAA has authority over space launches and atmospheric reentry, no U.S. entity currently has the authority to order such evasive action. Similarly, the Defense Department tracks space debris and warns of collisions but cannot force a private U.S. company or foreign entity to change a satellite’s flight path.
