An Introduction for New Users

jeffersonWelcome to the AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program. Since 1976, the Program has sponsored studies and public meetings on funding and policy issues affecting research and development (R&D).

The Program aims to provide timely, objective, and accurate information on federal R&D support. This Web site supplements our annual reports on R&D funding (see below).

Using This Site
We offer a variety of continually updated analyses on federal support for R&D, as well as supplementary tables and charts.

  • For information on the federal government’s fiscal year (FY) 2010 budget for R&D, the budget currently under consideration, go to the FY 2010 R&D page. Our analyses are arranged in chronological order on this page, with supplementary tables and charts at the bottom. Information on the most completed FY 2009 budget can be found on the FY 2009 R&D page.
  • We supplement our analyses with many charts and tables on aspects of R&D funding, including information placing federal R&D in the wider context of historical trends, the total federal budget, and total U.S. and world R&D. Please go to our Guide to R&D Funding Data to view this supplementary material.
  • Our major meeting each year is the AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy (the most recent was April 30-May 1, 2009, in Washington, DC). The next S&T Policy Forum will be May 13-14, 2010, in Washington, DC. You can find register for the Forum online and get more information.
  • We present these data in several public presentations throughout the year. If you would like to see the presentation graphics from one of our presentations, please go to the Seminars and Presentations page. We also sponsor, as part of the Washington Science Policy Alliance (WSPA), a series of seminars on science and technology policy. Go to this page to find out about the next seminar.
  • We provide regular E-mail updates to keep you informed about our work. You can sign up to receive them on our Guest Book page.

Publications
We publish one print report each year. The report, AAAS Report: Research and Development, examines the President’s budget proposals for R&D for key departments and disciplines in collaboration with contributors from other scientific, engineering and higher education societies. The most recent report, AAAS Report XXXIII: Research and Development FY 2009, was published in April 2008. Please go to the Recent Publications page to see our most recent publications. (The Program also publishes a Science and Technology Policy Yearbook of writings on major issues in science and technology policy for that year. The 2003 Yearbook is available.)

Adobe Acrobat
Many tables and charts are available as Adobe AcrobatTM Portable Document Format (PDF) files. You can view or print PDF documents in their original layout. PDF documents can be viewed using any type of operating system. An Acrobat viewer is included in most browsers, or you can download a free Acrobat viewer from the Adobe Web site (http://www.adobe.com/acrobat). Choose the appropriate viewer for your computer.
