1,000 San Francisco School Children to Celebrate Public Science Day at Exploratorium

San Francisco, CA - 15 February 2001 - About 1000 students from four San Francisco public schools will celebrate Public Science Day 2001 at The Exploratorium today, where they will conduct experiments in sound, flight, and magnetism. Schools participating in this year's program are Twenty First Century Academy, Spring Valley Elementary, West Portal Elementary School, and Visitation Valley Middle School.

Public Science Day is an annual tradition, which began 12 years ago in San Francisco -- also at The Exploratorium. Each year since 1989, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has sponsored the day of scientific exploration for children in the various locales where the organization holds its annual meetings.

Founded in 1848, AAAS is the world's largest federation of scientists with more than 138,000 individual members and 273 affiliated societies. The AAAS Annual Meeting opens today and runs through February 20 at the Hilton San Francisco & Towers.

WHAT: 1000 San Francisco schoolchildren will spend a day exploring principles of flight, magnetism and sound.
