Slide Show — AAAS at EuroScience Open Forum, 2004

<< Back Next >>

An estimated 120 attendees participated in a session on "Science, the media, and headline news," co-hosted by EurekAlert!, AAAS and the U.K.'s Science Media Centre. EurekAlert! Project Director Cathy O'Malley organized the session. Fiona Fox (left) of the SMC served as moderator, along with speakers Nils Bruzelius of the Washington Post; Malen Elvira de Ruiz of Spain's El Pais; Ginger Pinholster, director of the AAAS Office of Public Programs; Gordon Woods of the University of Idaho; Sophy Gould of the U.K.'s Medical Research Center; and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey. Woods commented that he "needed to overcome early instructions to avoid reporters and stick to science" in order to effectively communicate his research. Pinholster shared observations from top European reporters, as well as science communications data from EurekAlert!, the AAAS Annual Meeting, and a recent Science Press Package survey. Presentations were as follows:

Nils Bruzelius, Washington Post
Malen Elvira de Ruiz, El Pais
Ginger Pinholster, AAAS
Gordon Woods, University of Idaho
Sophy Gould, Medical Research Center
David Vaughan, British Antarctic Survey
