Science NewsBlog: Bread vs. Lobster
Newberg, thermador or just boiled in a big pot, there's a problem with lobster, and specifically with the Norway lobster, writes Eli Kintisch on the Science NewsBlog. It's an energy problem.
Citing Friederika Ziegler of the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology in Goeteborg, Kintisch writes that "it takes some 300 megajoules of energy to bring 1 kilogram of this crustacean from a trawler in the North Sea to consumers in Sweden." Producing a kilo of bread? Eighteen megajoules.
Kintisch also has an item about what freshman U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney, a California Democrat, said in an elevator full of thirsty scientists.
