AAAS Works to Certify an Already "Green," Energy-Efficient Headquarters Building
The imposing 12-story AAAS headquarters building, designed by renowned architect Henry N. Cobb of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, is among the finest examples of "green architecture" in Washington, D.C. Features and infrastructure in the 200,000-square-foot building, open since 1996, help to reduce environmentally harmful emissions, increase energy efficiency, and promote good health and comfort for employees.
Now, Building Manager Robert Zayas and his staff, supported by AAAS Chief Financial Officer Phillip Blair, are working to have the headquarters facility certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Only 26 buildings in the metro-D.C. region have so far earned this distinction under the Council's Leadership Environmental & Energy Design (LEED) program—mostly new construction, rather than existing facilities like AAAS.
