Top U.S. Officials to Speak May 13-14 at AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy

White House Science Adviser John P. Holdren, U.S. Food and Drug Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, and U.S. Representative Vernon J. Ehlers (R-Michigan) are among the scheduled speakers for the AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy in Washington, D.C., on 13-14 May.

The 35th annual Forum, the premier venue for discussion of current issues in science and technology policy, will feature plenary sessions on research and development spending in the 2011 federal budget; strategies for strengthening innovation in the United States; and roles for science and technology in national security, including combating cyber espionage.

Holdren will deliver the keynote address during the opening plenary session, which begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday 13 May. That session, on the budget and policy context for R&D in the FY 2011, also will include remarks by Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas W. Elmendorf; Linda Katehi, chancellor of the University of California, Davis; and Patrick Clemins, director of the AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program.

Hamburg will be the luncheon speaker on Friday 14 May.

U.S. Representative Vernon J. Ehlers

Ehlers, ranking member on the House Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, will deliver the annual William D. Carey Lecture at 5:45 p.m. on May 13. That lecture is free and open to the public.

In addition, other sessions at the Forum will focus on international science cooperation, geo-engineering and other climate-change policy issues, and assessing the impacts of science and technology policy.

The AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.
