Reports from CAIP Affiliates: American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
The American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and its Foundation represent more than 12,000 medical specialists worldwide in the field of ear, nose, and throat medicine and surgery. The AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, the world’s largest meeting and exposition of otolaryngology, takes place each September. About 1/3rd of attendees are from outside the United States.
The AAO-HNS/F International Outreach Program has established relationships with national societies in 33 countries on four continents. These International Corresponding Societies (ICS) develop joint meetings with the AAO-HNSF at their national congresses and at the AAO-HNSF annual meeting in the form of symposia, workshops, and all-day meetings. There are ICS representatives on the Academy’s board of governors, and on the International Advisory Board of the AAO-HNSF scientific journal, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and ICS resident liaisons with the Section on Residents and Fellows. The Academy maintains a Speakers Bureau of US members available to speak on the specialty at international meetings, including language capabilities, and areas of special interest. In addition, travel grants are offered to international scholars studying in US otolaryngology programs to enable them to attend the AAO-HNSF meetings.
Members and residents participate actively in humanitarian medical missions outside the USA, especially surgical and medical treatment of ear disease, surgery for cleft-lip/cleft palate and other congenital anomalies; benign and malignant head and neck tumors. International otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons and professionals active in the field may join the Academy as International Fellows (if board-certified), International Members (if trained in otolaryngology), International Resident Members or International Fellows-in-training (if in a recognized program), or International Scientific Members if holding a PhD or equivalent. This entitles them to all the privileges of membership except for voting and office holding. Membership includes subscriptions to the scientific journal and monthly Bulletin magazine.
The Eugene N. Myers, MD International Lecture on Head and Neck Surgery is given at the Annual Meeting by a distinguished international surgeon. In the last few years, three symposia at each annual meeting have been designated International Symposia. From 2006 on, there will be no limit to the number of international symposia, which will be peer-reviewed like the rest of the program. Five or more Instruction Courses are delivered in Spanish. International scientists participate in the Research Forum, including named lectures, miniseminars, and oral and poster presentations.
