Section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences

Letter from the Chair

Dear Members and Friends of Section W,

Welcome to the AAAS Section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences. As we enter into year 2015, the 10th anniversary year of Hurricane Katrina, there is no better reminder of the tremendous importance of our science to society across meteorology, climatology, oceanography, limnology and hydrology. We invite all members with interests in these areas to affiliate with Section W. The main function of our section includes nominating distinguished members for AAAS Fellowship and organizing sessions at the AAAS Annual Meeting. The 2015 Annual Meeting of the AAAS will be in San Jose, CA, February 12-16, with the theme: Innovations, Information, and Imaging. The meeting will focus on how science and technology are being transformed by new ways to collect and use information. Progress in all fields across the AAAS is increasingly driven by the ability to organize, visualize, and analyze data. Section W will be sponsoring and co-sponsoring a number of sessions along these lines.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Past Chair, Andy Dessler, for his past service to the Section during 2013-2014. Similarly, please join me in welcoming Michael Prather as the Chair-Elect who will take on the Chair’s responsibilities at the conclusion of the 2015 meeting. As anyone who has been affiliated with Section W knows, it is the Section Secretary who keeps everything going smoothly throughout the year, from coordination Fellow nominations to the development of symposia proposals. This past year Dave Halpern stepped down after many years’ of yeoman service as the Section Secretary. We all owe Dave a debt of gratitude. Section business has not lost a beat as a result of Sally McFarlane stepping forward to fill the void. Thank you Sally!

We hope the AAAS can be a forum to introduce the larger scientific community to some of the cutting edge research and accomplishments within the Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences.  If you have any ideas of how Section W can help, please send them to Sally McFarlane (Sally.McFarlane@science.doe.gov) or me (tonyb@essic.umd.edu). If you are interested in a leadership position in the section, please let us know. We welcome any and all of your input.

Antonio J. Busalacchi
Chair, Section W
