The AAAS Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility is presented annually by the American Association for the Advancement of Science to honor scientists and engineers whose exemplary actions have served to foster scientific freedom and responsibility. We hope that the presentation of this award will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers as they begin their careers.

This annual award was established in 1980 and consists of a prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration, and reimbursement for travel and hotel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting.

The 2013 award was given to Hoosen Coovadia  for his lifelong devotion to children’s health and for defending, in the face of opposition from his government, the use of sound science in the development of policies addressing the treatment and prevention of HIV/ AIDS.
