Senior Scientists and Engineers

Senior Scientist teaching DNA

Welcome

The Senior Scientists and Engineers (SSE) is an organization of scientists, engineers, educators, physicians, and other professionals who volunteer their services to support the needs of government, education, and the community. SSE is sponsored by Education and Human Resources Programs at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

SSE’s purpose is to provide a forum for retired science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals to continue making important contributions in their areas of expertise while enjoying the fellowship of their colleagues.  Since its inception, SSE has also included members who are still working part-time.

The activities are currently focused on the AAAS/SSE STEM Volunteer Program, which is aimed at mobilizing the large number of retired STEM professionals in the country to assist K-12 science teachers. Please take some time to read about the Program and consider volunteering to assist science teachers in your local schools. If you live in Montgomery County, MD, or Fairfax County, VA, you can join the AAAS/SSE volunteer projects in these areas by contacting Ron McKnight in Maryland and Don Rea in Virginia. If you live elsewhere in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area and are interested in forming a project with your local school district, please contact Don Rea. If you live elsewhere in the country, this website can help you to find other volunteer projects and also provides advice and guidelines for starting your own volunteer project.
