FCPS Science Volunteer Project
In 2007, the AAAS Senior Scientists and Engineers (AAAS/SSE) opened discussions with the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia, to implement the FCPS Science Volunteer Project in middle schools. The initiative began in January 2008 with nine volunteers assigned to 8th grade science teachers in eight schools.
Because each school has a different set of needs, cooperating teachers and volunteers work out how best to utilize the experience and expertise of the volunteer scientist or engineer. Volunteers are currently engaged in the following activities.
- Assist in setting up and taking down experimental equipment
- Monitor students during laboratory sessions
- Give lectures on scientists and their scientific findings
- Conduct appropriate demonstrations to support lessons
- Coach students working on Science Olympiad activities after school
- Participate in after-school Science Club activities
The FCPS project is now recruiting scientists and engineers to volunteer for the 2009-10 school year. A September meeting will be held to orient new volunteers and update information for current volunteers. There will be other meetings during the year (January and May) to report on progress, address problems, and plan for the next academic year.
