The American Society for Aesthetics

Brief History: The American Society for Aesthetics was founded in 1942 to promote study, research, discussion and publication in aesthetics. The term “aesthetics,” in this connection, is understood to include all studies of the arts and related types of experience from a philosophic, scientific, or other theoretical standpoint, including those of psychology, sociology, anthropology, cultural history, art criticism, and education. “The arts” are understood broadly to include not only traditional forms, such as music, literature, theater, painting, sculpture, and dance, but also more recent additions such as film, photography, earthworks, and performance art, as well as crafts, decorative arts, digital production, and various aspects of popular culture.

In 1991 the Society co-sponsored, with the National Endowment for the Humanities, a summer institute Philosophy and the Histories of the Arts. In 1992 the Society celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its founding. The Society is affiliated with the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, and El Congreso Inter-Americano de Filosofia.

Main activities: The Society publishes an interdisciplinary quarterly journal, The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. The ASA Newsletter is published 3 times per year and the Society holds an annual National Meeting and 3 regional meetings: Eastern, Rocky Mountains and Pacific Divisions.
