Reports from CAIP Affiliates:
International Studies Association

ISA was founded in 1959, and since then it has vigorously promoted research and education about international affairs. With well over three thousand members in North America and around the world, ISA is the most respected and widely known scholarly association in this field. We cooperate with 53 international studies organizations in 32 countries, and we are a member of the International Social Science Council, and have nongovernmental consultative status with the United Nations.

Conventions: The association's annual convention is a major international scholarly event, including well over 450 panel sessions and involving participants from more than forty countries. Conventions are held at alternative sites in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and overseas. The next annual convention will be held in Portland in February of 2003. ISA also cosponsors special conferences with sister organizations around the world. Examples of such conferences include the joint meetings in Japan between JAIR and ISA in 1996, the joint conference in Mexico between AMEI and ISA in 1997, the joint convention in Austria between ECPR and ISA in 1998, and the Hong Kong Conference in July of 2001.

Publications: The association sponsors three journals of the highest quality in international relations. International Studies Quarterly started in conjunction with the association as its flagship journal. More recently, two other journals have been added. The International Studies Review is critically acclaimed for its synthesis of theory and literature, and its broad interdisciplinary and multinational perspective on the field. Our most recent journal, International Studies Perspectives (ISP) focuses on teaching, policy application, and controversies in the field. In addition, ISP and our electronic newsletter on ISA/'s web page strive to bring news about the field and its practitioners to the membership.

Building Communities of Scholars: In order to develop better communications between specialists and practitioners and scholars, the topical and functional interests of ISA members are reflected in twenty interdisciplinary sections. Each section has its own officers. The sections activities include organizing panels and enhancing communications among interested scholars through meetings, publications, and occasional papers. Some sections also hold annual meetings.

Membership in ISA will provide substantial benefits to both scholars, practitioners, and students of international affairs. If you are not already a member, we urge you to join us now. If you have questions about the Association, please feel free to contact us.
