AAAS membership remained strong in 2000, ending the year at 138,000. Science circulation, including institutional subscriptions, ended the year at about 154,000 after dipping below 150,000 for most issues during the summer and fall. Although these numbers represent a slight decline from the previous year, the net revenue decrease was more than offset by gains in library site-wide subscription sales. Science circulation, membership dues, and library site-wide subscriptions remained solid and continued to support advertising sales. AAAS also offered students and postdocs more and more services free of charge, so the full impact of AAAS benefits in the scientific community may not be expressed in the membership numbers alone.

Science Online continued to gain readership. In 2000, the number of members who have full text access online measured almost 42,000, and approximately 27 percent of all members have now signed on for Science Online full-text access in addition to their print subscriptions to Science. Furthermore, Science Online site-wide subscriptions were held by 377 institutions, almost double the 200 of the previous year, demonstrating spectacular growth. Library site-wide subscriptions represented more than $1 million in revenue to the association.
In the second quarter of 2000 (April–June), Science Online received 11.7 million page requests, an estimated 30 percent of which came from outside the United States. The number of visits during the same period was 3.38 million. The number of page requests rivals that of some multi-title sites, and proves that Science’s visibility around the world is higher than it ever has been.
