Anisotropy and Spiral Organizing Centers in Patterned Excitable Media

Oliver Steinbock, Petteri Kettunen, Kenneth Showalter Department of Chemistry, West Virginia University

1. Spiral-centers1.mpg (2.0 Mbytes, mpeg format)
Propagating chemical waves in a patterned Belousov-Zhabotinsky system, prepared by printing the catalyst of the reaction on membranes with an ink-jet printer. The catalyst pattern is a linear dot density gradient with random dot locations perpendicular to the gradient (left, high density; right, low density). Wave positions (white) were obtained by image subtraction.

2. llow.mpg (3.6 Mbytes, mpeg format)
Propagating chemical waves in a patterned Belousov-Zhabotinsky system. Similar to the movie 1. Spiral-centers1.mpg except for the linear dot density gradient (top, high density; bottom, low density) and the lower excitability of the medium (due to a lower sulfuric acid concentration).
