William Gardner, Ph.D.

| William Gardner is a psychologist and statistician who
studies mental health services and methods for health services research.
His statistical research has concerned the use of categorical time
series methods for studying social phenomena. He is currently
studying the primary care mental health treatment of children, as
well as community violence by psychiatric patients. In addition,
he writes on public policy and medical ethics. Dr. Gardner is
co-Director of the Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC), a leading
research center for studies of health services. As Director
of the CRHC Data Center, Dr. Gardner leads the data management and
data analytic services of the CRHC, and he sets the agenda for its
methodological research. Dr. Gardner also writes and teaches
on professional and research ethics, and is a member of the executive
committee of the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at the University
of Pittsburgh. He is the AAAS chair of the National Conference
of Lawyers and Scientists, a joint committee of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science and the Science and Technology Section
of the American Bar Association.
Dr. Gardner received his AB in social studies from Harvard University;
MS in psychology, MS in biostatistics, and Ph.D. in psychology from
the University of Utah.
