| Judge Pollak received his legal degree from Yale Law
School. He clerked for Justice Wiley Rutledge, United States Supreme
Court. He was an associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &
Garrison; Special Assistant to Ambassador-at-Large Philip Jessup,
United States Department of State; and Assistant Counsel, Amalgamated
Clothing Workers. He has been Dean of both the Yale Law School (1965-70)
and the University of Pennsylvania Law School (1975-78). He has served
on the United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania,
since 1978.
He is the author of numerous articles, most recently, "Remarks
on the 200th Anniversary of the Accession of John Marshall as Chief
Justice," 27 Journal of Supreme Court History 216 (2002); "Judging
Under the Aegis of the Third Article," 51 Case Western Reserve Law
Review 399 (2002); "Philadelphia Lawyer: A Cautionary Tale," University
of Pennsylvania Law Review (1997); and "Criticizing Judges," Judicature
(1996). Forthcoming writings include: "From Cardozo to Dworkin:
Some Variations on Professor Nelson's Theme," 48 St. Louis University
Law Journal; and "Marbury v. Madison: What Did John Marshall Decide
and Why?" 148.1 American Philosophical Society Proceedings 1. Judge
Pollak is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute
and was Vice-President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
