Dr. Savitz is Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology
at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. He
received his MS in Preventative Medicine from Ohio State University
in 1978 and his PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh
in 1982.
His research interests are in reproductive and occupational/environmental
epidemiology. Major research has focused on the causes of preterm
birth and related adverse pregnancy outcomes, as well as potential
carcinogenic effects of electromagnetic fields in the home and workplace,
the influence of occupational exposures on pregnancy outcome, and
the determinants of preterm delivery. He is a member of the American
Public Health Association, Society for Epidemiologic Research, International
Epidemiological Association (North American Councilor), International
Society for Environmental Epidemiology, Society for Pediatric Epidemiologic
Research (currently President-elect). He is Editor of Epidemiology
and serves on the Editorial Board for Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology.
Dr. Savitz has taught Epidemiologic Research Methods, Reproductive
Epidemiology, and Theory & Quantitative Methods in Epidemiology,
and recently authored a book entitled, "Interpreting Epidemiologic
Evidence."
