Howard Schachman, Ph.D.

Howard K. Schachman is Professor of the Graduate School, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served on the advisory boards of numerous national and international professional organizations and has been Chair of the Department of Molecular Biology and the Director of the Virus Laboratory at Berkeley. Dr. Schachman is a past president of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. From 1994 to 2002, he served asSpecial Advisor to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and Ombudsman in the Basic Sciences. He was aember of the AAAS Committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility.

He has received many honors including the John Scott Award of the City of Philadelphia, the Warren Triennial Prize of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Merck Award of the American Society of Biological Chemists, the Public Service Award of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology, the Scientific Fredom and Responsibility Award of AAAS, and the Berkeley Citation for Distinguished Achievement and Notable Service at the University of California. Dr.Schachman is the recipient of honorary degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Naples and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Foreign Member of the Academia Nazionale Dei Lincei.

Dr. Schachman obtained a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his Ph. D. in Physical Chemistry from Princeton University.
