AAAS Submits Additional Comments on OMB Peer Review Proposal

AAAS has sent additional comments to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on its revised guidelines governing peer review by federal agencies. The second draft of the OMB proposal, which was published April 28 in the Federal Register, seeks to implement a standardized approach to peer review of scientific information used by agencies in setting regulatory policies. Public comments were due May 28.

In its comments, AAAS expressed gratitude for a number of improvements to the guidelines and to the OMB for responding to "our comments and those of other scientific groups on the previous draft bulletin." The letter, however, criticized inconsistent treatment of attribution and disclosure policies, and lack of clarity over what constitutes exempt scientific information. A copy of the AAAS letter was also sent to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
