NONPROFIT INSTITUTIONS

Federal funding for R&D allocated for nonprofit institutions (other than universities) in the Gulf States totaled $36 million in FY 1997 (see Table 1). This was only 1.3 percent of total R&D expenditures for the area. Alabama led the way again with $20 million while Louisiana and Mississippi both received $8 million for research conducted by independent nonprofit institutions.
