Kansas Religious Community Conversations on Evolution and EducationAutumn of 1999 – Spring of 2000, Kansas City, Lawrence, Wichita, Pittsburgh, Emporia, Hays, and Halstead, Kansas
In the summer of 1999 Kansas State Board of Education acted to eliminate from the Kansas public school science education standards requirements to teach about "macroevolution," Big Bang cosmology and the age of the Earth. This provided an opportunity to explore the role of local religious communities in relation to public science education. DoSER program staff organized a series of six local conversations on this topic. These conversations have offered insights into the specific factors that affect religious community participation in the shaping of public science education and have helped identify the sorts of resources that need to be developed to enhance the quality of that participation.
