Science, Religion, and the Origin of Life13 September 2001
A fundamental question for philosophy, religion and science is How
did Life Arise?" Varying scenarios for life origin include a miraculous
event, a natural but unlikely event, and an inevitable natural event,
given enough time and the right conditions. The keynote speaker will
address how scientists approach the answer to this question. Recent
research that explores under what natural environments life might arise,
and what challenges and advantages viewing life as a hierarchy of emergent
properties poses for philosophy, religion and science, will be discussed.
Keynote speaker:
- Dr. Robert Hazen, Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington
