News & Events: Workshop
International Jewish Discourse Project on Religion and Ethics at the Frontier of Genetic Medicine
Three workshops were held:
- 7-11 December 2002 - Washington DC
- 29-30 July 2002 - San Francisco, CA
- 8-11 December 2001 - Washington DC
This project brought together religious scholars and ethicists representing diverse branches of the US and Israeli Jewish communities to consider the ethical, religious, and public policy significance of current developments in human genetics and genetics-related medicine.
Specific topics included stem cell research, gene therapy and genetic testing. Drawing on a series of briefings by and discussions with prominent scientists engaged in genetics research and development, the project participants will prepare a volume of scholarly essays reflecting Jewish perspectives on these developments as well as resources for use in congregational and rabbinical educational settings. This project was carried out in collaboration with the Jewish Studies Program at San Francisco State University.
