AAAS Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion

Thematic Areas: Cosmos

Since the emergence of consciousness human beings have looked at the heavens in wonder. Human culture and especially religions have reflected this wonder and have sought to place humankind in a cosmic context. Over the past century human understanding of the extent, structure and history of the cosmos has expanded to a literally astronomical degree. This area of the DoSER program seeks to explore the implications of the growing body of knowledge about the cosmos and its composition, including the possible cosmic extent and history of life, for religious understanding and ethical perspectives.
