AAAS Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion

Biography

Walter Shropshire earned his Ph.D. from George Washington University in 1957 and was a post-doctoral fellow in Biophysics with Max Delbruck at CalTech. In 1959 he returned to DC to work 32 years as a research physicist at the Smithsonian Institution. A life long Methodist he was first ordained in 1977 after completing a course of study program. He served several small churches part-time, as pastor-in-charge, until he retired as assistant director from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in 1986. He then entered ministry full-time and obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Seminary in 1990. He retired from full-time ministry in July 2003 after 12 years as an associate pastor at Foundry UMC in Washington, DC He continues to teach part-time at Wesley Seminary, including courses in Science and Religion.
