AAAS established the Center for Science, Technology and Congress in July 1994. Funded by a grant from the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund, the Center provides timely, objective information to Congress on current science and technology issues and assists the science and engineering community in understanding and working with Congress.

AAAS Holds FY 2009 R&D Budget Briefing
The Center for Science, Technology and Congress held a congressional luncheon briefing in conjunction with the House Research and Development Caucus. Attendees heard opening remarks by Research and Development Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Rush Holt. AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program Director Kei Koizumi presented the Administration's R&D budget proposal for FY 2009. (March 13, 2008)

AAAS Submits Written Testimony on FY 2009 R&D Budget Request
AAAS CEO Alan Leshner submitted a written testimony to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation commenting on the President's FY 2009 R&D budget proposal. Leshner applauded increased funding for science agencies part of the American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI), but expressed concern for the flat or decreasing funding other science agencies, including biological, are facing. AAAS Writes Letter of Support for Evolution in Florida Science Standards
AAAS submitted a letter to members of the Florida Board of Education and Education Department supporting the inclusion of evolution in Florida's new science standards. The board passed the standards on February 19.

Science and technology advisers to the U.S. presidential campaigns of Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama outlined their candidates' S&T plans and took questions from a standing-room-only audience at the AAAS Annual Meeting on February 16. Read more...

Visit Our New Site on S&T in the 2008 Presidential Election
The Center for Science, Technology and Congress, with support from the Lounsbery Foundation, has created a Web site as a resource on candidates' S&T positions, and to provide the research community with a vehicle for informing the candidates on emerging S&T issues.

Attend Briefing on Climate Change Science and Policy
Congress is examining legislative proposals that address various aspects of climate change, with vast amounts information circulating on the effects of these proposals on the environment and economy. This January 11 congressional briefing will provide tools that can assist policymakers in deciphering the scientific information contained in these proposals and determining what science can and cannot contribute to the discussion.
