The seven states of the Midwest play a significant role in the U.S. R&D
enterprise. One-fifth of the nation's R&D is performed in this region, primarily
by industrial firms. The federal government plays a strong role in this R&D
enterprise, and spends billions of dollars a year in the Midwest on R&D projects
that underpin the Midwest's strengths in high-technology sectors. The Midwest
received $8.1 billion in federal R&D funds in FY 2005, according to a newly
released report. Midwestern universities especially are major contributors to
the U.S. R&D enterprise; they receive nearly 16 percent of all federal R&D
support to universities. The AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program, in cooperation
with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC; a constortium of twelve
research universities) released a report on The Future
of Research & Development in the Midwest: Trends and Indicators (pre-publication
PDF copy) on June 27 at a conference on "Developing a Regional View of the
Midwest Economy" in Minneapolis. The report, relying on National Science
Foundation (NSF) data, presents and analyzes the impact of federal R&D funding
on seven Midwestern states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
and Wisconsin) and underlines the importance of federal R&D to the Midwest's
economy, especially to the region's research universities.

Below
are summary tables and charts showing the latest National Science Foundation (NSF)
data on federal R&D by state for fiscal year (FY) 2005 and all R&D for
2004. Data on the geographical distribution of R&D by state or region are
collected by the National Science Foundation's
Division of Science Resources Statistics; we are indebted to NSF SRS for collecting
and publishing state-level R&D data. The National Science Foundation
publishes state profiles
of federal R&D spending for all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. The
Alliance for Science and Technology
Research in America (ASTRA) also publishes state profiles based on NSF
and other data. - Summary Tables of State Data FEDERAL
